The Frankston City Award of $15,000 is voted for by visitors to the 2005 Contemporary Sculpture Survey, which is currently showing at the McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park in Langwarrin.

The Award, sponsored by Frankston City Council, is given to the artist whose sculpture attracts the most votes from the general public.

This year the winner is Darren Davison for his fascinating work homespace 2005.

The exterior of this sculpture gives no clue as to what awaits the spectator inside. Using everyday materials to construct an outwardly ordinary structure, the viewer enters, walks down a short passage into total darkness, turns a corner – and encounters a personal cosmos within. The effect is truly startling.

Darren Davison was born in Melbourne in 1975 and received his Bachelor of Media Arts [Photography] from RMIT in 2001. He has participated in various selected group exhibitions including the 2003 McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award (with Matthew Cox). Their entry Spillwater is permanently sited in the McClelland Sculpture Park.

Darren Davison lives and works in Sassafras in the Dandenongs, Victoria.,

The winner was announced on Sunday 28 May.

The McClelland Contemporary Sculpture Survey continues until 25 June 2006.
