On Sunday 29 October 2006, thirty-six public galleries across Victoria will throw open their doors as part of the first ever Get into Art! open day. From Mildura in the north of the state, across to Gippsland in the east, Hamilton in the west and metropolitan Melbourne, galleries will be open, offering free entry* to all visitors alongside a wide range of specially designed programs and activities for a wide range of age groups and interests.

Among the plethora of experiences offered are: workshops for adults and children, guided walks through sculpture parks and galleries, floor talks by artists and curators, performances, story telling, lectures on a wide variety of subjects, food and wine tastings and in some areas, subsidised transport to enable people to travel from outlying areas.

Amongst the events planned by each gallery …. Horsham Regional Art Gallery will stage a performance by the Wimmera Women’s Circus; City Museum at Old Treasury has millinery demonstrations; Maroondah Art Gallery is to feature an African choir and a workshop based around their African textiles exhibition; at Hamilton Art Gallery there will be model making in association with artist Callum Morton’s exhibition ‘Tomorrow Land’ Monash Gallery of Art, inspired by Emmanual Santos’ photographic exhibition of angels and biblical visions has declared the day ‘Angel Day’ and will feature a capella performances and other angel themed events; Geelong Gallery will have tastings of food & wine from the region; Shepparton Art Gallery have invited Melbourne stencil artists to speak and run workshops. All 36 Galleries have collections that invite a viewing. Textiles are a feature of Ararat Regional Gallery, sculpture is a speciality of McClelland Gallery + Sculpture Park and Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum is renowned for its major Australian art works of the late 1800s.

People who may never have visited their local gallery before will find Get Into Art! the perfect introduction. “Wherever you live in Victoria you are never far from an outstanding public gallery,” says Mary Delahunty, Minister for the Arts. If you haven't visited your local gallery before, Sunday 29 October is the perfect starting point to enjoy getting into art.

And for those who need just a little encouragement to revisit their local gallery, what extraordinary incentives.
